The national Lok Adalat in Mohali on Wednesday quashed an FIR against rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh, whose real name is Hardesh Singh Aulakh, after accepting a police closure report in a six-year-old case, as per latest reports.

The case dates back to 2018 and concerned the alleged use of obscene and derogatory words against women in his song Makhna.

As per Hindustan Times report, the FIR had been registered at the Mataur police station in Mohali under sections 294 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code, Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, and Section 6 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. The complaint was filed by ASI Lakhwinder Kaur and Manisha Gulati, who was the chairperson of the Punjab State Women’s Commission at the time.

During the hearing, both complainants told the court that they had no objection to the case being dismissed. The police report noted that the song had already been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on December 27, 2018, and that no particular woman had been named or targeted in the lyrics.

After reviewing the file and taking the consent of the complainants into account, presiding officer Anish Goyal accepted the closure report and ordered the FIR to be quashed.

This case had caused huge debate back in 2019 regarding the impact and influence of the Makhna song on the present society. Punjab Women’s Commission also suggested to ban the song due to the objectionable content in its lyrics.
