Millie Bobby Brown has finally addressed the relentless speculation surrounding her appearance, and her words reveal the emotional toll of growing up under constant public scrutiny. The Stranger Things star, who has been in the spotlight since childhood, spoke candidly about the chatter surrounding her looks in a recent interview with British Vogue. She called out what she described as invasive, irresponsible, and deeply hurtful commentary.
Earlier this year, Millie became the subject of intense online chatter and tabloid headlines during the press tour for her upcoming film The Electric State. Much of the conversation focused not on her work, but on her physical appearance, with social media users and media outlets speculating about plastic surgery and criticising her decision to experiment with her look.
Recalling the impact of the backlash, Millie shared, “I was depressed for three, four days. I was crying every day.” She went on to quote some of the comments that circulated online, saying, “‘Oh my God, what has she done with her face? Why has she gone blonde? She looks 60 years old!’”
While Millie made it clear that she understands the nature of fame and media attention, she drew a firm line at what she believes crosses into harassment. “I respect journalism. I love reading articles on my favourite people and hearing what they’re up to,” she said. “I understand that there’s paparazzi, even though it’s invasive, even though it feels like shit to me. I know that’s your job… But don’t, in your headline, slam me at the get-go.”
The actor stressed that such coverage can be especially damaging for young women in the industry. “It is so wrong and it is bullying, especially to young girls who are new to this industry and are already questioning everything about it,” she said, adding, “For some reason people can’t seem to grow up with me. Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time… And because I don’t, I’m now a target.”

This is not the first time Millie has spoken out. At 16, she posted a video highlighting inappropriate headlines about her body and appearance, calling for more kindness toward young performers. This year, after turning 21, she once again addressed the issue by publicly naming journalists who speculated about cosmetic procedures, including a headline that read, “Why are Gen Zers like Millie Bobby Brown ageing so badly?”
What made the criticism particularly painful, Millie revealed, was that she had been genuinely excited about the press tour. Inspired by The Electric State’s ’90s aesthetic, she worked with stylist Ryan Young to recreate iconic looks, borrowing outfits from the likes of Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton. Instead of celebration, the experiment became a source of distress. “I was crying while I was getting my hair and make-up done,” she said of a subsequent public appearance.
Ultimately, Millie said she decided to speak up not just for herself, but for other young women. “If me being blonde or wearing more make-up really bothers you, I’m going to address it, not just for myself, but for every other girl who wants to try a new hairstyle or wear a red lip,” she said. “I am 21. I am going to have fun and play and be myself.”
