A young entrepreneur from Kolkata has secured investment on the popular business reality show Shark Tank India, drawing attention to how the platform continues to shape India’s startup ecosystem. Megha Sarayan, founder of dessert brand Modge – by Land of Cakes, raised Rs 1 crore on Shark Tank India Season 5 after impressing investor Anupam Mittal during her pitch.

Mittal, founder and CEO of People Group and one of the show’s regular investors, agreed to fund the venture in exchange for 9 percent equity. The deal came after Sarayan presented the growth story of her brand and explained how she plans to expand the business in the coming years.

Sarayan, 26, founded Modge in 2017. The Kolkata-based brand offers a range of vegetarian cakes, desserts and savoury baked products. Over the years, the company has built its presence through a mix of cloud kitchens and physical outlets in cities including Kolkata and Hyderabad.

Her appearance on Shark Tank India brought national visibility to the brand, but the episode also highlighted a broader trend often seen on the show: young founders attempting to transform small regional businesses into scalable consumer brands.

During the pitch, Sarayan spoke about the challenges of running a food startup and the need to develop a structured approach to scale operations. “Shark Tank was always a dream for me, and I knew that to stand on that stage, I couldn’t just have a good product; I needed a business that could speak for itself,” she said.

She explained that although Modge had been operating for several years, preparing for Shark Tank forced her to organise the business more systematically. “I had been running Modge for years, but I realised I needed an organised system to scale ahead. The mentorship I received helped me bring structure to what I had built and gave me the confidence to present my business,” she added.

Shark Tank India has increasingly become a platform where founders not only seek capital but also validation, mentorship and national exposure. Over the past seasons, the show has featured entrepreneurs from smaller cities and diverse industries, ranging from food and consumer products to technology and services.

For Sarayan, the funding represents both financial backing and strategic support as she plans to expand Modge’s offline presence while continuing to grow its cloud kitchen network.

Her pitch on the show reflects how Shark Tank India has evolved into a major gateway for emerging entrepreneurs hoping to scale their ideas and reach a wider market.
