Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma set off a flurry of reactions after he playfully referenced gangsters targeting him while speaking at an event in Mumbai.
The remark came during which the host at the event was praising Kapil's long association with the platform.
When the host joked that both the OTT streaming platform and India had “had their eyes set on [Kapil] for a long time,” adding with a laugh that she hoped “police from 11 countries” weren’t watching him.
The crowd burst into laughter, prompting Kapil to quip, “ek do mulkon ke gangster bhi lage hue hain aaj kal” — loosely translating to “these days, gangsters from one or two countries are after me too.” Many interpreted this as a thinly veiled nod to the Lawrence Bishnoi network, whose associates have allegedly targeted the comedian’s Canada café.
Realising the sensitivity of his comment and that the event was being broadcast live, Kapil immediately laughed it off and urged the media present to “cut it out,” even as cameras continued rolling.
The reference carries weight given the history of threats and violent incidents linked to gang members in Canada.
Kapil and his wife, Ginni Chatrath, opened Kap’s Café in Surrey in 2025, and the restaurant was attacked multiple times over a span of months. Reports suggest that associates of Lawrence Bishnoi — notably Goldy Dhillon and Kuldeep Sidhu — publicly took responsibility for the attacks, which so far have caused property damage but no injuries.
Last seen in Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, Kapil will soon star in Dadi Ki Shaadi. He also hosts The Great Indian Kapil Show.
