More than three decades after the tragic death of actor Divya Bharti, fresh conversations have resurfaced around the circumstances of her passing, following comments by her former co-star Guddi Maruti. In an old interview that has resurfaced again, Guddi dismissed allegations that had once surrounded producer Sajid Nadiadwala, stating that Divya’s death was a tragic accident and not the result of foul play.
Divya Bharti died on April 5, 1993, after falling from the balcony of her fifth-floor apartment in Mumbai. Her sudden demise at the age of 19 shocked the Hindi film industry and led to widespread speculation at the time. Sajid Nadiadwala, who had married Divya in 1992, faced intense scrutiny in the aftermath of her death.
Speaking to Siddharth Kanan in a throwback interview, Guddi Maruti addressed the rumours that had circulated over the years.
She said, “When this happened, Sajid was not even at home. He was shattered. He had just returned to the city after a trip, and the news was unbearable for him.”
Guddi further revealed that designer Neeta Lulla was present at the apartment when the incident occurred. “Neeta Lulla was there and she saw everything happen. She was present when Divya fell, and she can guarantee that it was an accident. Divya was checking her husband Sajid’s car, so she bent down, and that’s when the accident happened,” Guddi said.
Recalling the days leading up to Divya’s death, Guddi shared details about a party held shortly before the incident. “At that time, she was seeing Sajid. This was the time we were shooting for Shola Aur Shabnam. She died on the night of April 5 and April 4 is my birthday. So, we all were partying together,” she said.
The gathering included several members of the film industry. “Govinda, Divya, Sajid and others were there. She was okay at the party but I felt she was a little sad. She had to go for an outdoor shoot but she didn’t want to,” Guddi recalled.
Guddi also described the evening moments before Divya fell from her balcony. “Divya was sitting on the edge of her 5th-floor balcony, legs swinging over the side. I told her it’s not safe and that she should get inside. She told me, ‘Kuch nahi hota (Nothing will happen).’ She wasn’t scared of heights. I got scared just looking at her,” she said.
At the time of her death, Divya Bharti was one of the most promising young actors in the industry, with several successful films to her credit. Her sudden passing left many projects incomplete and sent shockwaves through the film fraternity.
While investigations were conducted following the incident, her death was officially ruled an accidental fall. However, public speculation continued for years, often linking Sajid Nadiadwala to unproven allegations.
Guddi Maruti’s recent remarks revisit those turbulent days of 1993, reiterating that according to those present at the scene, the incident was a tragic accident.
