Actress Devoleena Bhattacharjee has come out in support of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on 30 January.
Her remarks addressed the ongoing controversy around the use of the word ‘Miya’ and the broader concerns surrounding illegal migration in Assam, an issue that has long shaped the state’s politics and public sentiment.
Devoleena Bhattacharjee took to her social media to responded directly to a social media post by Himanta Biswa Sarma, and wrote, “Dear Sir, I don't think we Assamese of Assam need any explanation regarding the 'Miya' word. We clearly know it's Bangladeshi Muslim illegal migration. It hurts those who are one of them. Assam is rising with you. And it will be with you always.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday (January 28) said that those attacking him for his remarks on 'Miyas', referred disparagingly to illegal Bangladeshi Muslims, should read the Supreme Court's order mentioning the 'silent and invidious demographic invasion' of the state.
The CM recently said that ‘Miyas’ were being 'harassed' during the ongoing Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls in the state, as they cannot be allowed to vote in Assam, and claimed that no Assamese -- Hindus or Muslims -- were facing any problem in the exercise. Opposition parties criticised him for this comment.
"Those who are attacking me for my remarks on 'Miya' -- a word used in Assam in the context of Bangladeshi Muslim illegal migration -- should pause and read what the Supreme Court of India itself has said about Assam," Sarma said in a post on X. (With PTI Inputs)
