The legal battle over the estate of late businessman Sunjay Kapur has entered a crucial phase, with the Delhi High Court urging all parties to step back from prolonged litigation and explore mediation as a possible way forward. The dispute has attracted widespread public attention due to the involvement of actor Karisma Kapoor, her children, Sunjay’s third wife Priya Sachdev Kapur, and his mother Rani Kapur.

Hearing multiple applications connected to the matter, Justice Mini Pushkarna observed that the case reflected a “very sorry state of affairs,” with deeply personal family issues being played out in public. The court noted that continued courtroom battles had only intensified the pain and suffering of everyone involved and stressed the need for compassion, reconciliation, and a more humane approach to resolving the dispute.

The conflict revolves around the authenticity of a will dated 2025, which Priya Sachdev Kapur claims was executed by Sunjay Kapur, leaving his entire personal estate to her. On the basis of this will, Priya has asserted control over Sunjay’s assets and the income generated from a family trust said to be worth several thousand crores.

However, the will has been strongly challenged by Karisma Kapoor, who is acting on behalf of her two children. She has alleged that the 2025 will is forged and has questioned its legal validity, arguing that her children’s rightful interests in their father’s estate are being sidelined. Adding another layer to the dispute, Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, has also opposed the will and Priya’s claim over the estate.

Rani Kapur has filed a separate suit seeking to have the family trust declared illegal. In her plea, she has urged the court to restrain the transfer of an interim dividend of around Rs 28 crore to Priya Kapur until the matter is finally decided. The trust itself has emerged as the central flashpoint in the legal tussle.

During the hearing, the court acknowledged the emotional toll on all sides. It referred to the profound loss suffered by Rani Kapur as a mother and also recognised that Priya Kapur is facing significant distress while fighting the case on her own. The judge underlined that while the family is blessed with immense wealth, it should not become a source of bitterness and division.

As proceedings concluded for the day, the Delhi High Court reiterated that any amicable settlement must protect the interests of all parties, especially the children. The matter is scheduled to be heard next on March 23.
