Noted choreographer Geeta Kapur, fondly known as “Geeta Maa,” has once again found herself at the centre of public discussion, not for her work in dance, but for her candid views on personal freedom, intimacy, and how society looks at women’s lives.
Geeta Kapur, who is 52 and has never married, recently spoke openly about the assumptions people make about her because of her age and the affectionate title given to her by her students. Addressing these perceptions, she made it clear that being called “Geeta Maa” does not mean she has no personal desires or emotional life.
“I am not a nun. I am not unmarried in the sense people assume,” she said. “I look for my moments. I meet people. I date. I am intimate too.”
Responding to the backlash, Geeta explained that her intention was never to provoke controversy but to challenge outdated thinking, especially when it comes to women.
She questioned why society becomes uncomfortable when women speak openly about topics that are otherwise considered normal. “Why is it assumed that after a certain age or once a woman gets a particular image, her personal life is over?” she asked.
Geeta also spoke about how public figures are often placed on a pedestal and stripped of their humanity. According to her, people forget that celebrities and well-known personalities have the same feelings, needs, and emotions as everyone else. “Everyone has feelings. Everyone has needs. There is nothing wrong or unusual about that,” she said.
Clarifying the “Geeta Maa” tag, she pointed out that the title was given to her by her students and fans out of love and respect. “It was never something I asked for,” she explained, adding that the label should not be used to judge or limit her personal choices.
In another conversation, she firmly stood by her words and said she sees no reason to apologise for speaking her truth. “I am happy in my life. I am physically satisfied. And I stand by what I said,” she stated.
Geeta further highlighted how women are often expected to fit into fixed roles, especially when they are respected or admired publicly. “When a woman is given a title like ‘maa’, her human desires are ignored,” she said, questioning why dignity and desire are treated as opposites.
