There was a sense of relief for filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari Bhatt on Friday, as the Supreme Court granted them interim bail in the Rs 30 crore cheating case that has kept them behind bars since December 7, 2025.
As per Bar and Bench, bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi ordered their release from Udaipur jail, directing the Chief Judicial Magistrate to set the specific bail terms and conditions.
Notices were also issued to the complainant, Ajay Murdia, founder of Indira IVF and Fertility Centre, as well as to the Rajasthan government. The matter is scheduled to be heard again on February 19.
Inside the courtroom, emotions ran high. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Vikram Bhatt and Shwetambari Bhatt, questioned the sweeping arrests, saying, “He cannot put the director, his wife, everybody in jail. What is going on?” The opposing side maintained that ‘it’s no so simple’, pointing to the seriousness of what they described as a Rs 30 crore fraud. However, the bench observed that ‘these cases’ cannot be used as a tool to recover money. The court clarified that the couple’s release is subject to bail bonds, and that Ajay Murdia will be formally added as a respondent in the case.
The allegations against Vikram Bhatt and Shwetambari Bhatt stem from a complaint accusing them of cheating and criminal breach of trust. Ajay Murdia has claimed that funds amounting to Rs 30 crore were taken in the name of a film project and misused. He has further alleged that fake invoices were created to withdraw money, which was then deposited into personal accounts.
Earlier, the Rajasthan High Court had rejected their bail plea, stating it would ‘not be appropriate’ to grant relief at that stage. In addition, a separate complaint was filed in Mumbai in January, accusing Vikram Bhatt and his daughter Krishna Bhatt Sarda of cheating another businessman of Rs 13.5 crore. That case is reportedly being examined by the Economic Offences Wing.
For now, the Supreme Court’s order offers temporary respite, even as the legal battle continues.
