Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur recently opened up about his experience watching Aditya Dhar’s espionage thriller Dhurandhar on Netflix, sharing his admiration for the film and its ensemble cast while giving fans a peek into why he missed its theatrical release.
Taking to social media on Monday, Shekhar Kapur praised the film’s storytelling, performances, and the way it effortlessly balances tension, emotion, and scale.
“Finally saw #Dhurandhar on Netflix. Terrific storytelling and very high level of performances even from minor roles. Director #AdityaDhar deserves all the praise he’s getting. Congratulations producer #jyotideshpande and looking forward to #Dhurandhar2,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), also hinting at his excitement for the upcoming sequel set to hit theatres on 19 March.

Fans quickly engaged, sharing their own appreciation for the film. One fan wrote, “It is rare for a 'Part 1' to stand on its own while setting up a 'Part 2.' Usually, they feel incomplete. Dhurandhar managed to deliver a full meal while promising a banquet. The scale of Indian storytelling just leveled up.”
Shekhar Kapur replied simply, “Agree,” showing his alignment with the sentiment. Another fan asked whether the Netflix version, which censored some language, affected the viewing experience.
He reassured them, saying, “It did not feel censored except for swear words .. but it was obvious what the characters were saying.”
Many were curious why he had not seen the film in theatres. Shekhar Kapur explained candidly, “I wish I had .. but it wasn’t available in theatres where I am,” adding, “I am in Dubai where it did not release.”
When asked if he planned to watch Dhurandhar 2 on the big screen, he responded, “If it releases where I am.” For context, Dhurandhar faced bans in six Gulf countries, including Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, limiting its initial theatrical release for fans abroad.
Dhurandhar stars Ranveer Singh, Sara Arjun, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, and Rakesh Bedi, weaving a gripping tale of an Indian spy infiltrating a Baloch gang in Pakistan’s Lyari.
Ranveer Singh’s portrayal of Hamza Ali Mazari, alias Jaskirat Singh Rangi, anchors the film’s tension and intrigue. With a worldwide box office collection surpassing Rs 1,328 crore, the film was both a critical and commercial success.
Fans are now counting down the days to Dhurandhar 2, eager to continue the high-stakes saga.
