Actor Rani Mukerji has spoken with warmth and honesty about navigating motherhood in a world very different from the one she grew up in.
As the mother of 10-year-old Adira Chopra, who belongs to Generation Alpha, Rani Mukerji admits that parenting today requires flexibility, patience and a good sense of humour.
In a recent interview with Zoom, Rani Mukerji described how her daughter is unafraid to speak her mind, even when it comes to her mother.
Laughing at the generational gap, she said, "She also fires me. She is Gen Alpha, so she fires me, and I have to listen to her. Because every generation changes. I used to get slaps from my mom. I can't expect to do that with her because she would slap me back."
Sharing a moment that perfectly captures her daughter’s free-spirited nature, Rani Mukerji recalled, "She was jumping in the house while the National Awards were happening. It's very sweet, but because she is an Alpha kid, I am very scared of her," a line that reflects both affection and awe at the confidence of children today.
The actor also became emotional while speaking about the loss of her father, Ram Mukherjee, whose opinion once mattered deeply to her.
Rani Mukerji revealed, "After my dad (Ram Mukherjee) passed away, I really miss getting his feedback on my performance. It is tough, but God balances things. He gave me my daughter."
She added that Adira Chopra has filled that emotional space, saying, "She is extremely close to me, and she is extremely proud of me. My daughter has taken my father's place. She is my biggest cheerleader today."
Despite growing up around films, Adira Chopra has watched only a few of her mother’s movies. Rani Mukerji explained, "Though she has not seen my films because she's too attached and she feels sad when she sees me cry, she finds it difficult to watch me on screen."
Her daughter prefers seeing her happy, enjoying films like Hichki, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Bunty Aur Babli, while Kuch Kuch Hota Hai proved too emotional due to its opening scene.
Rani Mukerji also shared a tender detail about how her daughter sees her beyond glamour. "When I am wearing makeup, she tells me, 'Mamma, you are not looking like my mother.' So when I remove my makeup and come to her, she tells me, 'Now you look like my mother.'"
On the work front, Rani Mukerji is preparing for Mardaani 3, written by Aayush Gupta and directed by Abhiraj Minwala. Produced by Aditya Chopra, the film is set for a theatrical release on 30 January 2026.
