Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, the creative force behind Bollywood favourites like 3 Idiots and Munna Bhai MBBS, has offered the most concrete update yet on the long-rumoured sequels to both iconic franchises, signaling real progress on scripts even though nothing is officially greenlit yet.

The director confirmed that he and his team are actively developing ideas and working on multiple scripts for a 3 Idiots sequel as well as Munna Bhai 3, bringing renewed hope to fans who have waited years for follow-ups to the beloved films.

While 3 Idiots remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated comedies, having starred Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani in its original 2009 run, Hirani said the idea for the sequel “sparked up out of nowhere” and development is underway despite no finished script yet.

He acknowledged that the early concept has generated buzz long before finalisation and confirmed that script work is in progress with an eye on turning the idea into a full screenplay.

Rajkumar Hirani shared with Variety India, "I currently have a few concepts in mind. I’m actively developing both films. I’ve been working on a script for ‘Munna Bhai’ as well as an idea for a ‘3 Idiots’ sequel."

Rajkumar Hirani also addressed Munna Bhai 3, the awaited third installment of the comedy-drama franchise starring Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi. The director remarked, "For the ‘3 Idiots’ sequel, it was just recently that this idea suddenly came to me out of the blue. I have no clue how it got out into the public. Because it’s still in the works, but we agreed to develop it. And then, whenever it materializes… but somehow one morning, I noticed that the news was circulating."

Rajkumar Hirani — whose most recent directorial was Dunki (2023) — revealed he currently has three or four scripts in development and will have to soon decide which project to prioritise. With both 3 Idiots 2 and Munna Bhai 3 in conceptual or early scripting stages, Bollywood fans are watching closely for official announcements about cast, production timelines or potential release dates.
