A simple tap on a screen has turned into a full-blown online debate, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas unexpectedly finding herself at the centre of a discussion about work culture, expectations and double standards in the film industry.
The actress recently liked an Instagram reel that compared her work ethic with that of Deepika Padukone, and the move quickly caught the attention of social media users.
The reel, which soon went viral, was shared by a content creator who praised Priyanka Chopra Jonas as a “true global star”. In the video, the creator spoke about her recent short visit to Mumbai, claiming she flew in, completed several professional commitments within a tight schedule, and returned to the United States within hours.
The creator then contrasted this with remarks about other actresses, taking a clear swipe at Deepika Padukone by suggesting that some actors insist on fixed eight-hour work shifts.
The video applauded Priyanka’s discipline and dedication, highlighting that she did not mention jet lag or make special demands, and instead focused entirely on her work.
While Priyanka Chopra Jonas did not respond directly, her “like” on the post was enough to set off conversations across fan communities and comment sections.
Reactions online were mixed. Many fans applauded Priyanka Chopra Jonas for her drive, international career and work ethic, seeing the reel as a reflection of her hustle. Others, however, felt the comparison was unnecessary and unfair, arguing that it singled out Deepika Padukone and reduced a nuanced issue to a rivalry between two successful women.
The discussion around Deepika Padukone’s work hours has already been public. After welcoming her daughter Dua with husband Ranveer Singh on 8 September 2024, Deepika reportedly requested eight-hour workdays.
When the makers of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit were unable to meet this requirement, she chose to step away from the film and the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD.
Addressing the broader issue without naming specific projects, Deepika Padukone later spoke to CNBC TV18 about the industry’s double standards.
She said, "By virtue of being a woman, if that's coming across as pushy or whatever, then so be it. But it is no secret that a lot of superstars, male superstars, in the Indian film industry, have been working for eight hours for years and it's never made headlines."
