Veteran playback singer Kumar Sanu has taken legal action against his ex-wife, Rita Bhattacharya, filing a defamation lawsuit in the Bombay High Court and seeking Rs 30 lakh in damages, as well as the removal of allegedly defamatory content.
According to the petition, Rita Bhattacharya gave recent interviews to entertainment platforms where she made various allegations against Kumar Sanu — including claims that he mistreated her during her pregnancy by withholding food and medical care, locking her in the kitchen, focusing on legal battles during her term, and having multiple extramarital relationships.
Kumar Sanu’s legal team has argued that these statements are false, harmful, and damaging to his reputation.
The lawsuit also cited a consent clause from their 2001 divorce agreement, finalised at the Bandra Family Court, which reportedly included a condition stating that neither party would make future allegations against the other. Sanu contends Bhattacharya’s interviews violate that clause.
Sanu’s attorney, Sana Raees Khan, has described the comments as going beyond personal grievance and entering the realm of public defamation, noting that the interviews have circulated widely on social media since September 2025, compounding the reputational harm.
As part of the action, Sanu also demanded that the platforms airing the interviews remove the content, and a hearing on the case was scheduled for December 17, 2025.
