  • Pre-production starts mid-2026; casting yet to be finalized
  • Film is not a direct sequel but aims for similar emotional depth and scale

After a brief pause from directing, Karan Johar is all set to return behind the camera with what is being described as his most ambitious film to date. According to sources close to the development, the filmmaker has locked the script for his eighth directorial venture—a grand-scale family drama that revisits the emotional terrain of his cult classic Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

The yet-untitled project is already generating strong industry buzz, with insiders revealing that the film is being positioned as Karan Johar’s biggest directorial outing so far. While Johar has consistently delivered lavish, emotionally driven cinema, this upcoming film is said to take that legacy several notches higher, both in scale and storytelling.

As quoted by Pinkvilla, “Karan has been quietly working on the script for a while now. The idea was to return to direction only when he felt completely ready with a story that resonated with his emotional sensibilities. This film is rooted in family values, relationships, and generational conflict—much like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham—but it is not a direct continuation of that story.”

Pre-production for the project is expected to begin by mid-2026, with the casting process likely to commence in the coming months. The film will reportedly feature two male and two female leads, and discussions are underway to assemble a cast that balances star power with strong performances. However, no names have been finalised as yet.

Interestingly, early chatter suggests that the film may be tentatively titled Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2, though the title has not been officially locked. Sources clarify that while the film draws emotional inspiration from the 2001 blockbuster, it will not be a conventional sequel. Instead, it aims to capture the same grandeur, familial warmth, and dramatic depth that made the original a timeless favourite.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham remains one of Karan Johar’s most iconic works, featuring an ensemble cast and themes of family, tradition, and reconciliation that continue to resonate with audiences across generations. With this upcoming project, Johar appears poised to revisit those emotions—this time through a contemporary lens.

As of now, Dharma Productions is yet to make an official announcement. But if early indications are anything to go by, Karan Johar’s return to direction promises to be nothing short of cinematic spectacle.
