Veteran poet, lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has publicly praised Assi, the latest social drama by filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, describing it as one of those rare films that “touch both your heart and your mind.”
Javed Akhtar explained why the courtroom drama left a lasting impression on him, underlining its emotional depth and intellectual engagement.
As quoted by India Today, "Some pictures touch your heart. And some films operate on an intellectual level, they engage your mind. But very few films manage to touch both your heart and your mind at the same time. I believe Assi is one such film," he said in the video.
"On one level, it is a deeply emotional story that will resonate with ordinary people. But on another level, it leaves behind some very serious questions. It does not hand out easy answers. Instead, it places those questions before society," he said.
Assi — starring Taapsee Pannu, Kani Kusruti and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub — follows the story of a woman who is brutally assaulted and left for dead, and her subsequent struggle for justice in a judicial system that often seems stacked against her. The film does not shy away from confronting uncomfortable truths about society, institutional indifference and the pain of survivors. Critics and audiences alike have noted its hard-hitting narrative and emotional resonance.
"Anyone who thinks deeply, who pays attention to what is happening around us, will walk away from this film reflecting on it. It has been narrated in a very graceful and compelling manner. And ultimately, the film leaves you with both answers and questions," he concluded.
Produced by T-Series and Anubha Sinha's Benaras Media Works, the film is currently running in theatres.
