Bollywood in 2025 was anything but predictable. The year delivered a telling verdict on changing audience preferences, as action-heavy spectacles, patriotic dramas, and thrillers dominated the box office, while traditional romantic comedies struggled to find a consistent footing. According to official data from industry trackers Sacnilk and IMDb, the year’s biggest theatrical successes leaned heavily into spectacle, nationalism, and genre-driven storytelling. Of the top highest-grossing films of 2025, a striking six belonged to the action or thriller genre, while only two light-hearted romantic dramas managed to break into the elite club. Here’s a closer look at the films that defined Bollywood’s box office in 2025.
Dhurandhar (845 crore and counting)

Ranveer Singh’s long-awaited comeback arrived in the form of Dhurandhar, a high-octane nationalist spy thriller directed by Aditya Dhar. The film leaned heavily into scale, suspense, and ideology, and positioned itself as one of the year’s most intense action dramas. Akshaye Khanna once again impressed audiences, this time as a formidable antagonist. The film crossed Rs 450 crore in India within just two weeks and went on to near the Rs 845 crore mark globally, thus cementing its blockbuster status. The film is still running in cinemas!
Chhaava (808 crore)

Undisputedly winner of a Bollywood film of the year, Chhaava emerged as a historic juggernaut. Directed by Laxman Utekar and headlined by Vicky Kaushal, the film chronicled the valiant life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his fierce resistance against the Mughal empire. The film’s emotional gravitas, scale, and intense visual storytelling struck a deep chord with audiences. Akshaye Khanna’s commanding return as Aurangzeb added further gravitas. With an overseas collection of Rs 91 crore and a worldwide total of Rs 808 crore, Chhaava became the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2025, earning Rs 601 crore in India alone across a remarkable 13-week theatrical run.
Saiyaara (570 crore)

In a year dominated by action, Saiyaara proved that emotionally driven romantic dramas could still command box-office power when executed well. Featuring debutants Aneet Padda and Ahaan Panday, the musical love story resonated deeply with younger audiences. The film enjoyed a strong theatrical run of 43 days, earning Rs 329 crore domestically and Rs 171 crore overseas, taking its worldwide total close to Rs 570 crore. Its soundtrack also became a chart-topper.
War 2 (365 crore)

Stylish, explosive, and unapologetically cinematic, War 2 delivered what fans expected. Hrithik Roshan’s action-packed sequel dominated multiplexes, collecting Rs 237 crore in India and Rs 365 crore worldwide, making it one of the biggest action spectacles of 2025. Despite this, the film turned out to be an underperformer considering its production budget.
Sitaare Zameen Par (267 crore)

Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par stood apart for its socially conscious narrative. Addressing the stigma surrounding specially-abled children, the film was a Bollywood adaptation of a Hollywood story, enriched by Khan’s close collaboration with individuals with Down syndrome. Surrounded by controversy regarding its OTT release strategy, including Aamir's decision to eventually release it on YouTube, the film nonetheless grossed over Rs 267 crore worldwide.
Raid 2 (237 crore)

Ajay Devgn’s return as Income Tax officer Amay Patnaik proved to be another winner. Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, Raid 2 continued the franchise more than a decade after the original. With a strong 50-day run, the film earned Rs 237 crore globally.
Housefull 5 (280 crore)

Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5 brought novelty to mainstream comedy with its dual-ending concept. Released as two versions — Housefull 5A and Housefull 5B, the film offered audiences alternate climaxes, a first for Bollywood on this scale. The experiment paid off, as the film collected Rs 183 crore in India and over Rs 280 crore worldwide during its five-week theatrical run.
Sikandar (184 crore)

Salman Khan’s Sikandar thrived on mass appeal rather than scale. Backed by strong word of mouth, the film earned Rs 110 crore domestically and Rs 184 crore worldwide. Despite this, the film was considered a disappointing return for the superstar.
Sky Force (150 crore)

Closing the list is Sky Force, an aerial action drama steeped in patriotic fervour. Featuring Veer Pahariya, Sara Ali Khan, and Akshay Kumar, the film collected Rs 112 crore in India and wrapped its global run at Rs 150 crore.
As the year heads towards its final stretch, all eyes are now on Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday’s upcoming romantic drama Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, which is slated for a Christmas release. Positioned as a big festive entertainer, the film is expected to test whether romance can still draw audiences to theatres in an era dominated by action spectacles and patriotic dramas. With Kartik’s proven box office pull among younger viewers and Ananya stepping into a more emotionally driven role, the film could well be 2025’s final wildcard, and potentially the year’s last big theatrical surprise.
