Smuggling stories usually thrive in dark corners and whispered deals, but Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web flips the lens to a far more unsettling setting: busy airports, crowded terminals, and everyday travellers who may not be what they seem. The upcoming Netflix crime thriller places danger right in plain sight, turning familiar public spaces into pressure cookers of suspicion and strategy.
Headlined by Emraan Hashmi, Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web promises a tense dive into the world of international contraband, where secrets move as swiftly as passengers and a single misstep can expose a vast criminal network. The series is directed by Neeraj Pandey, a filmmaker long associated with sharp, intelligent thrillers, and will stream on Netflix next week.
At the centre of the story is Arjun Meena, a customs superintendent navigating a web of lies, hidden agendas, and a powerful global syndicate.
Emraan Hashmi, who plays the role, is deliberately tight-lipped about the character’s deeper layers. Speaking at the trailer launch, the actor said, “I don’t want to give too much away about Arjun Meena. I think I would like the audience to experience this through the show.”
That restraint feels intentional. According to Emraan, surprises are baked into the very structure of the series.
“What’s interesting is the way the show is written. There are a lot of surprises, and that’s inherently there in the DNA of the show,” he explained.
Calling himself a fan of the genre, the actor added that thrillers face a unique challenge today. “For thriller audiences, it’s very difficult to surprise them. They’re always ahead of the curve. They know there’s going to be a cliffhanger or a twist. That’s why Neeraj’s work stands at the pinnacle. He understands how to stay one step ahead.”
Emraan revealed that when he first read the episodes, the unpredictability stood out immediately. “A lot of things in the show will take you by surprise, with wonderful cliffhanger moments throughout,” he said, reinforcing the promise that Taskaree won’t follow an easy or predictable path.
Adding another compelling layer to the series is Amruta Khanvilkar, who plays Mitali, a sharp, fearless officer deeply familiar with the workings of customs. Talking about her role, Amruta described Mitali as someone who commands attention without raising her voice. “When I was cast in this role, she is bad ass. She knows a lot about customs. Mitali is every Mumbai girl, and don’t mess with her,” she said.
Amruta also spoke about the physical demands of the role, noting that this project pushed her into new territory. “I have done action for the first time, and it was more about physical preparation than emotional. I’m extremely honoured to be part of this,” she added, underlining the show’s grounded, action-driven approach.
Beyond individual performances, Taskaree stands out for its setting. Airports are typically symbols of movement and anonymity, and the series uses that familiarity to its advantage. Suitcases become carriers of secrets, uniformed officers become potential targets, and ordinary-looking passengers may be key players in a dangerous global operation. The tension lies not in grand shootouts, but in glances, delays, and decisions made in seconds.

With Neeraj Pandey’s reputation for taut storytelling, Emraan Hashmi stepping into a restrained, strategic avatar, and Amruta Khanvilkar bringing grit and physicality to her role, Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web positions itself as a crime thriller that values intelligence over noise. It invites viewers into a world where danger doesn’t lurk in the dark, but walks confidently through brightly lit terminals, daring anyone to notice.
Taskaree will start streaming on Netflix on January 14.
