
Sunny Deol’s long-awaited return to the war drama genre has struck a chord with audiences as Border 2 hit cinemas on Friday, opening to strong numbers and an emotional wave of nostalgia.
The sequel to the 1997 classic Border was celebrated with a lavish special screening in Mumbai on Friday night, turning the evening into a full-fledged Bollywood gathering.
Sunny Deol arrived for the screening alongside Varun Dhawan, both visibly soaking in the excitement surrounding the film’s release.
Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan drew attention as he arrived with Brazilian model and rumoured partner Larissa Bonesi. The guest list also included Sonam Bajwa, Anya Singh, Medha Rana, and Indian cricketer Yashasvi Jaiswal, adding to the buzz around the screening.
Ahan Shetty made the night a family affair, attending with his parents Sunil Shetty and Mana Shetty. Standing firmly in his corner were Athiya Shetty and her husband, Indian cricketer KL Rahul, who were also present to cheer him on.
The enthusiasm was clearly reflected at the box office. On its opening day, January 23, Border 2 posted a robust Rs 32.10 crore net collection in India.
The momentum carried forward into Saturday, with early estimates placing Day 2 earnings at around Rs 21.08 crore net. By 7 pm over the opening weekend, the film had already amassed a total of Rs 51.08 crore net, with evening and night shows still underway.
Cinema occupancy figures painted a promising picture, with overall Hindi occupancy standing at 34.87%. Morning shows started slower at 15.51%, but footfalls rose steadily through the day, reaching 39.97% in the afternoon and peaking at 49.13% during evening shows.
Audience reactions across social media and theatres have been largely positive, suggesting that word of mouth could further boost collections in the coming days.
Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 revisits the backdrop of the 1971 India–Pakistan war, paying tribute to heroes from the Army, Air Force, and Navy.

Sunny Deol appears as Lieutenant Colonel Fateh Singh Kaler, inspired by Major General Hardev Singh Kaler, and Ahan Shetty represents the Indian Navy as Lieutenant Commander M. S. Rawat.
Backed by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta, the film also features Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Anya Singh, and Medha Rana in important roles.
