Akshay Kumar to play villain in Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 5: Report

Golmaal 5 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Hindi film sequels in recent years, and a fresh casting update has added to the buzz. During the theatrical screening of Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardaar 2, filmmaker Rohit Shetty subtly confirmed that the fifth instalment of the Golmaal franchise is officially in the works. Now, a new report suggests a major addition to the cast that could significantly change the tone of the film.

According to a report by Variety India, Akshay Kumar has joined Golmaal 5 as the lead antagonist. If true, this marks a significant casting shift for the franchise, which has traditionally relied on situational comedy and ensemble chaos rather than a central villain. Akshay Kumar is reportedly set to face off against Ajay Devgn and the rest of the iconic Golmaal gang.

Sources suggest that Golmaal 5 is being mounted on a larger scale than its predecessors, while still retaining the slapstick humour that has defined the series since its 2006 debut. Interestingly, the new instalment is also said to introduce fantasy elements, moving the narrative beyond the familiar prank-driven format. This creative shift hints at a more ambitious storyline, while keeping the franchise’s trademark madness intact.

In terms of the ensemble cast, Golmaal 5 is expected to bring back franchise regulars Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu and Shreyas Talpade. Supporting actors Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra, Mukesh Tiwari and Ashwini Kalsekar are also likely to return. Reports further suggest that Sharman Joshi may rejoin the series, while Kareena Kapoor Khan is said to be in talks, though her participation is yet to be officially confirmed.

On the production front, the film is expected to go on floors at Film City in Mumbai by the end of February.

Earlier reports indicated that Ajay Devgn would begin shooting in March 2026, with schedules planned across Mumbai and Goa. Despite recent concerns around security following an incident near Shetty’s residence, the makers are reportedly proceeding as planned, with enhanced safety measures in place.

With a tentative theatrical release planned for early 2027, Golmaal 5 promises a familiar yet refreshed take on the beloved franchise, especially if Akshay Kumar’s antagonist role materialises.
