Raju Bista from BJP is on the verge of winning at the Darjeeling constituency of West Bengal with 613,471 votes, as per Election Commission of India (ECI). At 6:10 pm, he was ahead Gopal Lama from Trinamool Congress (TMC) by more than 1.45 lakh votes in this hill station.
About Darjeeling constituency
Darjeeling, often referred to as the queen of the hills and known for its tea, timber and tourism industries, is up for a three-cornered contest. Apart from representatives from BJP and TMC, this constituency also has Munish Tamang standing for Congress.
The constituency has seven assembly segments with three in the hills and four in the plains. These are – Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Kurseong, Matigara-Naxalbari, Siliguri, Phansidewa and Chopra.
Raju Bista of the BJP had won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha election in 2019 with 750,067 votes. While BJP got 59.19 percent of the votehare, TMC got 26.56 percent share and Congress got 9.13 percent share.
Besides being a politician, Bista is also the managing director of Surya Roshni Limited. On 14 July 2021, he was appointed as a National General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.
