DMK leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has urged Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to reschedule the upcoming UGC NET exam, scheduled to be held on January 15 and 16, 2025. These dates coincide with the Pongal festival, a significant cultural event in Tamil Nadu.
In a statement on social media, Kanimozhi expressed her concern over the exam dates, stating, "I have written to the Union Education Minister, urging an immediate change in the exam dates for the UGC NET, which has been scheduled on the day of Pongal, January 15 and 16..."

Kanimozhi emphasised the cultural importance of Pongal, stating, "Pongal is not just a festival; it is a celebration of Tamil pride and identity." She argued that scheduling the exam on these dates demonstrates a lack of sensitivity towards the cultural values and sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu.
The UGC NET exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is crucial for aspiring researchers and academics. It determines eligibility for Junior Research Fellowships, Assistant Professor positions, and admission to Ph.D. programs. The exam will be held across 85 subjects over two shifts each day.
