Sadbhavana Diwas 2024: Sadbhavana Diwas, meaning ‘Harmony Day’, is observed every year on August 20 to mark the birth anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. This day serves as a reminder of his vision for a peaceful, prosperous, and united India.

History of Sadbhavana Diwas
Sadbhavana Diwas was first observed on August 20, 1992, following the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister of India in 1984, taking office during a time of significant turmoil, after the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi. His tenure as the youngest Prime Minister of India was marked by a forward-thinking approach to governance, with a strong emphasis on national integration and communal harmony.

Rajiv Gandhi recognised the importance of unity in a country as diverse as India. He believed that India’s progress was closely linked to the collective efforts of its citizens, regardless of their caste, creed, or religion. To honour his memory and the ideals he stood for, the Indian National Congress, the political party he led, along with various organisations and government institutions, established Sadbhavana Diwas. This day is dedicated to promoting the values of peace, unity, and harmony.

Significance of Sadbhavana Diwas
Sadbhavana Diwas is significant as it focuses on the importance of world peace, national unity, and interpersonal harmony. It is a day to remember Rajiv Gandhi’s vision of a modern and inclusive India, encouraging people to put aside their differences and work towards a harmonious society.

How Sadbhavana Diwas is Celebrated
Sadbhavana Diwas is observed with a range of activities aimed at promoting harmony and peace across the country. On this day, leaders and citizens pay homage to Rajiv Gandhi’s legacy through commemorative ceremonies held at his memorial.

Various events, including tree planting and environmental conservation activities, are organised to honour the spirit of Sadbhavana Diwas. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and educational institutions organise conferences and seminars focused on the importance of tolerance and peace.
