In a worrying trend for graduates from premium institutes in the country, almost 36 percent of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) students who registered for 2024 placements are yet to find jobs.
The placement season at the premier engineering institute begins from December and around 712 students out of the 2,000 registered are without jobs, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.
The grim data was shared by Dheeraj Singh, who is a former student of the institute and the founder of Global IIT Alumni Support Group. The placement season will officially end in May 2024.
This year the placement deficit was higher by 2.8 percent compared to the past year, when 32.8 percent of the students failed to secure employment. The institute had blamed the global economic meltdown for shortage of job offers.
Moreover, the students of the computer science and engineering department, which is the most sought after branch, have not been able to secure 100 percent placement this year, the report said. The branch usually records 100 percent placements.
Recently, many IITs have seen a decline in the quantity and quality of the job offers because of the global economic slowdown.
"Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) are being made but not many international firms have come out so far, as they are cautious of over-hiring and may come in towards the end of the season. Some of the firms based in the US and UK are not investing as much in long-term projects outside of the home and hence are not coming down as of yet,” a faculty member associated with the placement cell at one of the newer IITs told News18.
Recently, this worrying trend was also seen in the case of Indian Institute of Management Lucknow, which sought support from its alumni to maintain the institute’s “legacy of 100 percent placement record”.
