A man killed his estranged wife in front of their two children and later went live on Facebook to confess the crime before surrendering to the police in Kerala’s Kollam district, The Indian Express reported.
The incident took place in Thamarapally, Punalur municipality, on Sunday. Police identified the accused as Isaac and the victim as 39-year-old Shalini, who worked as a maid at a local school and lived with her mother.
According to officials, the couple had been living separately due to frequent domestic disputes. After allegedly attacking his wife with a sharp weapon, Isaac went live on Facebook to make an open confession.
In the video, he allegedly said, “I killed my wife. She did not obey me and had mortgaged the gold ring that I had given her. I have no regrets. I’m staying at the house which I had constructed after toiling. Her behaviour is arrogant. I’m not an alcoholic or a smoker. She is going for a job somewhere. She needn’t go for one, I’m working. But she has the support of her party and she comes home and goes out whenever she wants.”
The video circulated briefly before being removed but left viewers shocked.
Local councillor N Sundaresan said authorities had previously tried to mediate between the couple several times. He added that Shalini, once associated with the CPI(M), had recently joined the DMK, which angered Isaac. Despite showing signs of deep attachment, Isaac allegedly disliked her active social and political involvement.
Shalini’s 19-year-old son later filed a complaint, after which police registered a case of murder under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators have seized the mobile phones of both Isaac and Shalini and called in forensic experts to examine the crime scene.
Police confirmed that Isaac surrendered soon after the act.
