The administration of King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, has decided to relocate mazars/shrines located inside the campus after Ramzan.

Given that Ramzan is already underway, the administration has decided not to take any action during the holy month. Considering religious sentiments and social harmony and to prevent any law and order situation, the administration has decided to postpone the action as a precautionary measure and wait till the hearing of a case in this regard scheduled on April 4.

Dr K K Singh, a spokesperson of KGMU, Lucknow, said, "The Vice Chancellor thinks that taking any action during the month of Ramzan will not be right. No action will be taken during the month of Ramzan. A hearing in this case is scheduled for April 4."

"We expect that after the month of Ramzan ends, the management bodies of the respective mazars/shrines will shift the mazar to another location, for which they will be given 15 days," said Singh.

According to a report in Zee News, the administration had previously given the authorities time until February 28 to remove the shrines. According to sources, the hospital management is seeking legal and administrative advice on this matter to ensure further action is in accordance with regulations.

The decision comes in heels of a case in which a resident doctor at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) was arrested in an alleged case of forcible religious conversion linked to marriage. The accused doctor, Rameezuddin, was absconding after the registration of a case, following which police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest.

According to police, the case involves two women doctors who accused Rameezuddin and his family of pressuring them to convert their religion for marriage and even forced abortion. One of the women is a resident doctor at Agra Medical College, while the other is a resident doctor at KGMU, The Indian Express reported.
