A goods vehicle driver was dragged on the bonnet of a speeding car for nearly a kilometre along Old Airport Road on Wednesday afternoon, in a road-rage incident that has prompted police to vow zero tolerance against aggressive driving and triggered widespread public alarm over the city’s deteriorating road safety culture.

The Ulsoor police said the confrontation began at approximately 12.45 pm when a car brushed against a goods vehicle. The goods vehicle driver reportedly demanded compensation for the damage. What followed, however, escalated far beyond a routine traffic dispute.
A heated argument broke out between the two motorists. When the car owner refused to pay, the goods vehicle driver climbed onto the bonnet of the car in an apparent act of protest.
Witnesses and police accounts confirm that instead of stopping or de-escalating, the car driver accelerated and continued driving for nearly a kilometre, with the man clinging to the bonnet.
The victim remained trapped on the moving vehicle until it slowed down, at which point he jumped off. He escaped with non-fatal injuries, but eyewitness accounts describe the incident as deeply alarming. One witness reported that the man on the bonnet was “shouting and pleading” with the driver to stop, to no avail.
The incident was captured on video by onlookers and has since circulated widely, drawing sharp condemnation from residents, road-safety advocates, and public officials.
In a development that has intensified scrutiny of the car driver’s conduct, police investigations revealed that the individual is a repeat offender with prior cases related to rash driving registered against him, as per an Asianet report. Further checks also confirmed that the vehicle’s insurance had lapsed — a direct violation of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The combination of a prior record, uninsured vehicle and the extreme nature of Wednesday’s incident has led authorities to describe the driver’s actions as reflecting “gross negligence and a clear lack of accountability”.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), East Division, Bengaluru City, confirmed that a formal case has been registered and that investigations are progressing.
In a statement that underscored the gravity with which the police are treating the matter, the Deputy Commissioner of Police affirmed that strict legal action would be taken against aggressive driving, warning that any act of road rage would lead to an FIR and stringent legal proceedings. He urged motorists to drive responsibly and behave humanely, declaring a policy of zero tolerance against crime.
