Amazon is giving its AI-powered voice assistant a sharper sense of humour. The company announced that Alexa+ will soon offer a new “Sassy” personality mode, designed to deliver answers with sarcasm, wit and the occasional playful roast.
The new personality joins other styles such as Brief, Chill and Sweet, which were introduced last month as part of Amazon’s push to make Alexa interactions feel more conversational and personalised.
Unlike the other options, however, Sassy is restricted to adults.
Amazon says users will need to complete an additional security check in the Alexa mobile app before enabling the feature. During testing on iOS devices, that verification required a Face ID scan. The company also noted that the mode will not be available when Amazon Kids is enabled.
Once activated, the assistant adopts a tone that blends humour with mild irreverence. According to Alexa’s own description, the Sassy style operates on a simple idea: “help first, judge always.” Responses may include witty remarks or light teasing alongside the actual answer.
The assistant describes the experience as one where users can expect “reality checks delivered with charm, compliments that somehow sting, and warmth you didn’t see coming.”
At the same time, Amazon says the feature still operates within strict safety limits. The assistant will not engage in explicit sexual content, hate speech, illegal activity, personal attacks or harmful advice.
The Alexa app also warns that the Sassy personality may contain “mature subject matter,” which is why it requires additional verification before being enabled.
The feature is part of Amazon’s broader effort to reinvent Alexa with more advanced AI capabilities. The upgraded Alexa+ platform introduces generative AI-powered conversations, along with customisation options that allow users to adjust the assistant’s tone and personality.
With personality modes like Sassy, Amazon appears to be experimenting with making AI assistants feel less robotic — and a little more human.
