Amazon’s Alexa chief says the smartphone app era is ending as ‘ambient intelligence’ takes over

Smartphones are unlikely to disappear overnight, but their role may shift from being the primary interface to just one component in a larger, more fluid system.

  • Ambient intelligence will replace screen-centric tech experiences
  • Alexa aims to evolve into a seamless, cross-device AI presence

The familiar ritual of unlocking a phone, opening an app and scrolling through feeds may be approaching its final chapter. That is the view of Panos Panay, Amazon’s head of devices and services, who believes the next generation of technology users will move away from screen-centric experiences altogether.

Speaking at a recent industry conference, Panay argued that smartphones and apps are reaching a tipping point, driven by fatigue with social media and the rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence. According to him, younger users are already showing signs of disengagement from what he described as endless “doom scrolling”, and this behavioural shift will fundamentally reshape how people interact with technology.

Panay described a future defined by what he calls “ambient intelligence”, where technology fades into the background rather than demanding constant attention. In this model, computing does not live primarily on a screen but exists quietly across devices, homes and wearables, ready to respond when needed and invisible when not.

He suggested that the appeal of this shift lies in simplicity. Instead of navigating menus or learning interfaces, users will increasingly rely on natural interaction. Asking a question and receiving an answer becomes the default, without the friction of opening apps or searching manually. In Panay’s view, the real breakthrough of AI is not about building better applications, but about making the concept of an app feel unnecessary.

This philosophy aligns closely with Amazon’s long-term ambitions for Alexa. Panay indicated that the company is actively rethinking how its voice assistant fits into this ambient future. Rather than being tied to a single device or screen, Alexa is expected to evolve into a presence that travels with users across different environments.

While Amazon already sells a wide range of Alexa-powered hardware, Panay acknowledged that the ultimate form factor for AI assistants has yet to be defined. He suggested that the most important AI devices of the future may not look like phones at all, and may not even resemble current smart speakers or wearables. Instead, they could emerge from entirely new product categories that prioritise seamless integration over visible interfaces.

Asked about potential competition from other technology players exploring AI-first hardware, Panay remained confident in Amazon’s position. He pointed to the company’s existing ecosystem, which includes smart home products, wearables and audio devices, as a foundation for delivering an assistant that can accompany users wherever they go.

He also stressed that privacy and security will be critical as AI becomes more embedded in everyday life. According to Panay, trust is a non-negotiable contract between technology companies and their customers. If that trust is broken, he warned, users will simply walk away, regardless of how advanced the technology may be.

The broader implication of Panay’s comments is a gradual but profound change in personal computing. Smartphones are unlikely to disappear overnight, but their role may shift from being the primary interface to just one component in a larger, more fluid system. In this emerging model, intelligence surrounds the user rather than demanding their attention, marking a potential end to the app-driven era that has defined mobile technology for more than a decade.
