A 24-year-old woman was killed on Wednesday evening when a car allegedly driven by a serving police head constable at high speed rammed her e-rickshaw from behind and ran her over near the Kali Paltan Bridge in Ambala Cantonment, prompting protests from family members who accused authorities of attempting to shield their colleague.
Nikita Bajaj, a private company employee in Gurgaon, had arrived in Ambala earlier in the day from Delhi with her brother Harsh for a family function. At approximately 8.30 pm, the siblings boarded an e-rickshaw in the Cantonment area bound for Ambala City.

According to police, a Honda City car driven by a head constable posted at Lalkurti Police Station struck the e-rickshaw from behind. The impact threw Nikita onto the road and the vehicle ran over her. She was rushed to the trauma centre at Civil Hospital in Ambala City, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ravinder Singh, who was operating the e-rickshaw, recounted that the policeman had been driving at high speed, causing the woman to be thrown onto the roadway before the same vehicle ran over her, he said. Singh said bystanders apprehended the driver at the scene and handed him over to police.
Eyewitnesses and relatives of the deceased alleged the head constable was in an inebriated state at the time of the accident. Family members accused police of attempting to protect their colleague, demanding that the officer’s medical examination be conducted in the presence of media representatives.
Tension mounted late into the night at the hospital’s trauma centre, where relatives staged a protest over the handling of the case. Additional police personnel were deployed to maintain order.
Police have since confirmed that the accused officer was taken to Civil Hospital, Ambala City, for a medical examination shortly after the incident. Video footage shows head constable Amit Kumar being escorted into the hospital premises and later undergoing blood sample collection by medical staff. In the video he looks so inebribriated that he could even wear his jacker properly.
According to reports, Kumar lost control of his vehicle, leading to the fatal collision. Station House Officer Dharmabir confirmed that a case had been registered and that medical findings pointed to alcohol consumption.
"On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered under the relevant sections. In the medical report of Amit Kumar, the doctor has mention alcohol smell, and his blood samples have also been taken. The body of the girl was handed over to the family after the post-mortem examination," the SHO said.
Nikita’s father, Jaspal Bajaj, called for strict legal action and a fair investigation, alleging negligence on the part of the accused. Police officials said the allegations are being examined and the matter remains under active investigation. A post-mortem examination was scheduled for Thursday.
Sources confirmed that local residents, expressing outrage over the incident, assisted in apprehending the officer and turning him over to authorities. The family’s protest has drawn support from local residents, who have joined demonstrations demanding justice.
Nikita had been employed with a private firm in Gurgaon for the past four years. Her brother, Harsh Bajaj, works as a supervisor at a hotel in New Delhi.
