At least 30 residents of Delta 1 in Greater Noida have fallen ill over the past few days, complaining of loose motion and stomach pain after allegedly consuming contaminated drinking water.

Residents claimed that the water supplied to their homes was mixed with sewage and had a yellow colour. However, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has denied any large-scale sewage contamination in the water supply.

According to residents, the problem has been continuing for the last three days. Pankaj Nagar, president of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of Delta 1, said several complaints were made to GNIDA, but no quick action was taken. He added that this was not the first such incident. “Earlier also, around 15 residents from A Block fell sick after drinking contaminated water,” Nagar was quoted by The Indian Express as saying.

Vijay Singh, a resident of C-200, said the water coming to his house had a yellow colour for the past three days. “It looks like sewage has mixed with the water. My children are suffering from diarrhoea, and I had to take them to the hospital,” he said.

Health officials confirmed that several residents required medical attention. Medical Superintendent of Dankaur Primary Health Centre, Narayan Kishore, said around 30 people, including children, were examined at a health camp organised in the area. “Five to six people complained of stomach pain. At first glance, it seems they fell sick after drinking contaminated water. The symptoms were mild, and another medical camp will be organised,” he said.

GNIDA later issued a statement saying it had taken immediate notice of the complaints. The authority said a leaking pipe was repaired and water samples were collected for testing. “There was a problem in the water supply connection at one house, and a leak was found at another location. Repairs were carried out immediately, and no evidence of sewage mixing was found,” GNIDA said.

GNIDA CEO N G Ravi Kumar has ordered random water testing across Greater Noida to prevent further incidents.

The Greater Noida comes at a times when Indore is grappling with water contamination tragedy, where 20 people have died according to local reports families. Residents in Indore’s Bhagirathpura reported stomach infections after suspected contamination of drinking water. Civic authorities there also initially denied sewage mixing but ordered testing and repairs of pipelines.

Similar cases have been reported from Gandhinagar in Gujarat, which saw a rise in typhoid cases linked to contaminated drinking water, exposing major flaws in the city’s newly laid water supply system. Health officials have confirmed 70 active cases so far, concentrated in Sectors 24, 26, 28 and Adiwada. At least seven leaks have been identified in the pipeline network, allowing sewage to mix with the drinking water supply.

Several scientific studies have also found that a majority of Hyderabad’s drinking water sources are critically polluted. Research has found high levels of faecal coliform bacteria, indicating sewage contamination, along with traces of heavy metals. A study titled Assessment of Water Quality of Osmansagar, published in September 2025 by scholars from Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), rated the lake’s water quality as “very poor.”
