  • All three sedans to get updated styling and new features.
  • Facelifts to keep current powertrains and safety ratings.

Buyers in the mid-size sedan segment will have three refreshed options in calendar year (CY) 2026 as the Volkswagen Virtus facelift, Skoda Slavia facelift and Hyundai Verna facelift are set to enter the market with updated styling, feature additions and possible technology upgrades.

The mid-size sedan segment in the mass market space is left with only four models now. In addition to the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia and Hyundai Verna, there is the Honda City. The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz was discontinued last year.

Among the three launches in CY26, the Verna facelift is expected in the first half. The current-generation Verna, which was introduced in CY23, brought a sharp design shift and segment-first features such as ADAS. The upcoming update is likely to focus on cosmetic revisions, feature recalibration and possible software enhancements to stay competitive. We do not expect changes to the powertrains of the car. For buyers, this could mean incremental improvements in safety tech, infotainment and interior trims.

The Virtus facelift is lined up for the third quarter of CY26. It is the largest-selling model in the segment, appreciated by buyers for its performance-oriented character, driven by 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol engines. The facelift is expected to bring exterior styling tweaks, revised interior elements and feature updates.

The Slavia facelift will follow in the fourth quarter of CY26. As the platform sibling of the Virtus, both models being based on Volkswagen Group's India-specific MQB-A0-IN architecture, the Slavia is likely to see similar structural updates, though with distinct styling changes to maintain brand differentiation. Customers can expect refreshed design elements, upgraded cabin features and possible improvements in in-car technology.

Interestingly, all three models -- Virtus, Slavia and Verna -- have scored a 5-star safety rating at Global NCAP. They have not been tested at Bharat NCAP yet.

"For sedan buyers, CY26 could be a strategic year to evaluate options. Facelifts typically address customer feedback, improve feature lists and align products with changing regulations and safety norms. At the same time, they generally retain proven powertrains and chassis setups," an industry expert said.

"With SUVs continuing to dominate volumes, these updates signal that manufacturers still see demand in the mid-size sedan space. For customers who prioritise driving dynamics, boot space and highway comfort over high seating position, the refreshed Virtus, Slavia and Verna could offer stronger value propositions," he added.
