
Leading carmakers like Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Mahindra & Mahindra and Hyundai Motor India reported a strong start to calendar year (CY) 2026, posting robust domestic volumes in January, supported by sustained demand for SUVs.
Tata recorded domestic sales of 70,222 units in January 2026, including electric vehicles (EVs), marking a 46.1% year-on-year (y-o-y) increase compared with 48,076 units sold a year ago.
The Safari SUV-maker witnessed multiple product-level milestones during the month. While the Nexon SUV posted its highest-ever monthly sales of over 23,000 units with cumulative sales crossing 10,00,000 units, the Punch SUV delivered its best-ever monthly performance of over 19,000 units with its cumulative volumes going past the 7,00,000-mark, making it the fastest model in the industry to do so. The Tiago hatchback also crossed 7,00,000 cumulative sales.
Tata said demand remained strong across its new launches, including the Sierra SUV, and petrol versions of the Harrier SUV and the Safari SUV. The company is also ramping up the production of the Sierra SUV to meet demand.
Mahindra reported domestic SUV sales of 63,510 units in January 2026, reflecting a 25.37% y-o-y growth over 50,659 units sold in the same month last year.
Mahindra's Automotive Division CEO Nalinikanth Gollagunta said that the maker of the Scorpio N SUV began the year on a strong note, building on the strong momentum of last year's performance.
"On January 14, we opened bookings for the XUV 7XO and the XEV 9S, clocking 93,689 bookings for a booking value of Rs 20,500 crore, a record-breaking milestone in just four hours," he added.
Hyundai posted its highest-ever monthly domestic sales of 59,107 units in January 2026, as against 54,003 units in January 2025, registering a rise of 9.5% y-o-y.
The domestic volumes during the month were driven by the Venue SUV (12,413 units) and the Aura sedan (7,978 units), with both achieving their highest-ever monthly sales.
The Creta SUV maker's MD and CEO Tarun Garg said that January 2026 marked a defining chapter in the company's journey as it achieved its highest-ever monthly domestic sales.
"As we look ahead in the year, we will continue to lead with purpose, creating enduring value for our customers, empowering our stakeholders and shaping the future of mobility in India," he observed.
In the two-wheeler space, Hero MotoCorp carried on its handsome performance, clocking domestic volumes of 5,20,208 units in January 2026 at a growth of 26.15% y-o-y over 4,12,378 units sold a year ago.
"The strong growth in January 2026 was driven by robust performance in the scooter segment supported by growing consumer demand for new offerings such as the Xoom and the Destini. The motorcycle portfolio also witnessed strong traction, led by the Xtreme and the Glamour X," the company said.
TVS Motor Company's domestic two-wheeler volumes jumped 30.42% y-o-y to 383,262 units in January 2026 from 2,93,860 units in January 2025.
The domestic sales of the maker of the Bullet 350 and the Classic 350, Royal Enfield, rose 15.7% y-o-y to 93,781 units in January 2026 from 81,052 units in the same month last year.
