Residents of Andhra Pradesh seeking a driving licence are expected to benefit from a more transparent, standardised and technology-driven testing process following Maruti Suzuki India's agreement with the state transport department to automate driving test tracks across the state.
Under the Memorandum of Agreement, four automated driving test tracks (ADTTs) will be set up at regional transport office (RTO) locations in Eluru, Ongole, Vizianagaram and Anakapalli. These facilities will serve applicants for two-wheeler, light motor vehicle and, in Ongole, heavy motor vehicle driving licences. The move is aimed at reducing subjectivity in licence testing and ensuring that applicants are evaluated purely on driving skills.
For applicants, the key change lies in the use of technology. The ADTTs will use high-definition cameras, RFID sensors, real-time analytics and an integrated IT system to conduct driving tests with zero human intervention. Test results will be generated automatically, allowing candidates to receive outcomes based on predefined parameters aligned with the Central Motor Vehicle Rules. This is expected to improve consistency across test centres and reduce scope for manual discretion.
By applying a uniform testing framework, the system is designed to ensure that only candidates who meet the required standards are issued licences. According to Maruti Suzuki, the objective evaluation process makes licence testing more comprehensive and efficient, while also improving transparency for applicants.
Maruti Suzuki will be responsible for automating and maintaining the four test tracks for three years from the date of commissioning. The company will also support technology integration with the Sarathi Parivahan system, training of personnel and routine maintenance. The Transport Department will provide infrastructure, carry out civil works and conduct licence tests using the automated system.
"ADTTs use advanced technology that ensures a comprehensive, efficient, and transparent process with zero human intervention. This guarantees that only skilled drivers are awarded a driving license, thereby improving overall road safety," said Hisashi Takeuchi, MD and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India.
With these four additions, Maruti Suzuki's automated driving test track network will expand to 81 locations nationwide, covering multiple states and urban centres.
