The shooting left at least 29 people injured, according to police.

The mass shooting at Bondi Beach on Sunday, which left at least 11 people dead and dozens injured, has sparked global attention, both for the tragedy and for the striking front-page headline of an Australian newspaper that read, “You Ba****s,” with the strap line “Evil on our shores.”

Taking to microblogging site X to comment on media coverage, economist and author Sanjeev Sanyal noted, “Interestingly, when it comes home to their own, western media does not describe terrorists as misguided sons of school teachers or community doctors," sharing a photo of the front page of the Australian daily The Daily Telegraph's Monday edition.

The Daily Telegraph delivered a direct response to the attack, placing the newspaper at the centre of national attention. Its front page featured a stark image of the shooter with the headline “YOU BA***RDS,” with a strap line on the top that reads "Evil on our shores".

The attack targeted Sydney’s Jewish community during a Hanukkah celebration organized by the Chabad of Bondi. More than 1,000 people had gathered for the “Chanukah by the Sea” event, promoted as a “perfect family event to celebrate light, warmth, and community,” featuring live entertainment, music, and games.

The attack occurred during a Hanukkah celebration organised by the Chabad of Bondi, which had drawn more than 1,000 attendees to the “Chanukah by the Sea” event.

Of the two suspected attackers, one remains in custody in critical condition, while the other was shot dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the identities of the suspects. Based on the timing, weapons used, and deliberate targeting, the incident was quickly classified as a terrorist attack.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a “dark moment” for the country. He said the attack deliberately targeted Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which is traditionally a day of joy and celebration.

They have been identified as a father-and-son duo, Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram with possible links to ISIS. The father was killed by police, while the son was injured and is receiving treatment in the hospital.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, on Monday, expressed India’s “fullest support” to Australia following the deadly shooting, which left 15 people dead. Over 40 others were reported injured in the attack, carried out by two gunmen.

In a phone conversation with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Jaishankar conveyed India’s deepest condolences to the victims and their families.

Earlier, Jaishankar had strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “terror attack on Hanukkah celebrations” and expressing solidarity with those affected.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the attack on X, stating, “Strongly condemn the ghastly terrorist attack carried out today at Bondi Beach, Australia, targeting people celebrating the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. On behalf of the people of India, I extend my sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. We stand in solidarity with the people of Australia in this hour of grief.”

PM Modi reaffirmed India’s zero tolerance towards terrorism and reiterated support for global efforts to combat all forms of terrorist activity.
