The USS Gerald R. Ford, the newest and most expensive aircraft carrier in the US Navy, has been deployed as part of Operation Epic Fury, Washington’s ongoing military campaign targeting Iranian assets. The move places the Navy’s most advanced carrier strike group directly into an active combat zone and signals a clear expansion of American involvement.
CVN 78 is not just another carrier rotation. It is the first ship of the Ford class, built to replace the long-serving Nimitz-class carriers. Built for about $13.3 billion, it represents the largest and most technologically complex warship ever built by the United States. The carrier operates on nuclear power, allowing it to remain at sea for extended periods without refuelling, and carries a full complement of F/A-18 Super Hornets, electronic warfare aircraft and surveillance platforms.
US defence officials have said the deployment strengthens ongoing strike operations aimed at degrading Iranian military infrastructure and command nodes. Operation Epic Fury was launched after a series of escalatory exchanges, with Washington describing the campaign as focused on neutralising what it calls immediate threats. The addition of the Gerald R. Ford significantly increases sortie capacity and operational flexibility.
Unlike fighter jets that depend on land bases, aircraft on a carrier can be repositioned at sea as the situation changes. The strike group can operate from international waters and adjust its location without negotiating access to foreign airfields. That mobility gives Washington room to act quickly without being tied to one country’s approval.
The Ford-class carriers also bring updated hardware. Instead of old steam catapults, they use an electromagnetic launch system that sends aircraft off the deck more smoothly and with less strain on machinery. In simple terms, that allows more launches in a shorter window. The carrier does not sail alone. It is surrounded by destroyers and cruisers equipped with missile defence systems and additional strike weapons, forming a tightly protected floating formation.
Sending the US Navy’s newest carrier into the region is not just about adding aircraft. It is a visible step up. It expands the scale of operations and leaves little doubt about the seriousness of US intent. Governments across the Middle East, along with rival powers, will be watching how far this deployment goes and whether it leads to further escalation.
With the Gerald R. Ford now in play, the US presence is no longer background noise. It is front and centre in an already tense situation.
