US President Donald Trump appeared at the White House this week with a noticeable red rash along the right side of his neck, extending above his shirt collar and toward his ear. The mark was clearly visible in photographs and video, prompting immediate questions about its cause.

The White House did not initially address it during the appearance, but interest grew quickly once images began circulating.

What the doctor said

In a statement released Monday, Dr. Sean P Barbabella, Trump’s physician, said the president is using a “very common cream” as a preventative skin treatment. The redness, he added, is expected to last “a few weeks.”

The statement did not identify the condition or name the medication. There was no additional information about whether the rash is linked to an infection, irritation, allergy or another dermatological issue, the New York Times reported.

At 79, Trump is the oldest president sworn into office, and his health has been a recurring topic throughout his political career. Over the past year, he has appeared with visible bruising on his hands. Aides previously attributed some bruises to frequent handshakes. On another occasion, Trump said he had struck his hand on a table and mentioned taking aspirin.

He has also been observed with swelling in his legs, which aides have described as chronic venous insufficiency, a circulatory condition in which veins have difficulty returning blood to the heart.

Medical disclosures from Trump and his team have often been brief. During the 2024 campaign, his doctor released a short health summary that did not include basic metrics such as weight, blood pressure or cholesterol levels. After Trump’s serious bout with Covid-19 in 2020, his physicians later acknowledged that early public descriptions of his condition had been overly positive.

What could cause a rash like this

Dermatologists say redness in the neck area can stem from several common issues, including contact dermatitis, fungal infections, eczema or reactions to topical products. In older adults, skin can also become more sensitive to shaving products, fabrics or medications.

Without a diagnosis from the president’s physician, it is not possible to pinpoint the exact cause. The reference to a medicated cream and a short treatment window suggests the condition is not considered severe.

What happens next

For now, the White House has described the rash as minor and temporary. If the redness fades as expected over the coming weeks, the issue may pass without further comment.
