‘Vice President of Azerbaijan is President’s wife’: Why JD Vance’s joke about Usha in Baku is being read as a 2028 hint

Vance’s joke about his wife quickly sparked discussion back home in the United States, where he is widely seen as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential race.

US Vice President JD Vance’s joke about his wife during a visit to Azerbaijan sparked speculation about his 2028 presidential ambitions. The trip focused on supporting US-brokered peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan and strengthening security cooperation.

US Vice President JD Vance drew attention during his diplomatic visit to Azerbaijan after making a light-hearted remark about his wife, Usha Vance, that many interpreted as a subtle nod to his own future political ambitions.

Standing alongside Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during a joint press statement on February 10, 2026, Vance joked about Usha Vance “getting ideas” after learning that Azerbaijan’s First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva also serves as the country’s Vice President.

“And as I understand it, the Vice-President of Azerbaijan is also the President’s wife, and hopefully that doesn’t give the Second Lady any ideas,” Vance said, prompting laughter from those present.

Visit aimed at regional peace

Vance arrived in Azerbaijan from Armenia as part of a regional trip focused on formalising a US-brokered peace process between the two neighbours. He is travelling with his wife and their three children.

The visit follows mediation efforts led by US President Donald Trump, who helped broker a peace agreement in 2025 between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The two countries committed to renouncing territorial claims against each other and refraining from the use of force following decades of conflict over the Karabakh region. Azerbaijan regained control of the territory in 2023, ending more than thirty years of Armenian separatist rule.

Before arriving in Baku, Vance met Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan. He and Usha Vance also visited the Armenian Genocide memorial and laid a wreath. A social media post about the visit was later deleted following online backlash.

Praise for Azerbaijan and security cooperation

Thanking President Aliyev for his welcome, Vance highlighted Azerbaijan’s role in supporting US-led security efforts.

“I think many Americans may not know that, for example, the Azerbaijanis were some of the last to leave Afghanistan,” he said, referring to cooperation during the war on terror.

Vance announced that the US would work with Azerbaijan to help protect its territorial waters and ensure that the peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan “sticks.” He also praised Aliyev for maintaining relations with both Turkey and Israel.

He added that he and Usha were looking forward to the official dinner hosted later in the evening.

Aliyev calls visit historic

President Aliyev welcomed Vance by thanking the Trump administration for its “positive attitude” towards Azerbaijan. He said his government had lifted restrictions on transit cargo to Armenia and had begun supplying oil products to its neighbour.

“In other words, today’s visit of Vice President Vance can be called historical, from the point of view of hosting our friend and guest, and from the point of view of the substance of negotiations and the Strategic Charter which has been signed,” Aliyev said.

“Once again, Mr. Vice President, welcome to Azerbaijan.”

2028 hints and political buzz

Vance’s joke about his wife quickly sparked discussion back home in the United States, where he is widely seen as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential race.

President Trump recently described Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as “very capable” future presidential candidates in an NBC News interview.

In December 2025, Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk also openly promoted Vance’s candidacy, saying, “We are going to get my husband’s friend JD Vance elected for 48 in the most resounding way possible.”

While Vance has not formally declared his intentions, his remarks in Azerbaijan have added fresh fuel to speculation about his ambitions beyond the vice presidency.
