US President Donald Trump has lashed out at Canada and threatened to impose a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States if Canada establishes what he described as a "Drop Off Port" arrangement with China.
In a post on his Truth Social social media platform, Trump directly addressed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as "Governor Carney", and cautioned him against any plans to make Canada a transit point for Chinese goods and products destined for the American market.
"If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a 'Drop Off Port' for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken," Trump wrote.
Trump also painted a dire picture of the consequences such an arrangement would have for Canada itself, warning that China would devastate the country's economy and society.
"China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life," Trump said in his message.
Trump made clear that any trade agreement between Canada and China would trigger immediate and severe economic retaliation from the United States.
"If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.," he declared.
Later on, he wrote on Truth Social, "The last thing the World needs is to have China take over Canada. It’s NOT going to happen, or even come close to happening! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J.TRUMP"
The warning comes amid ongoing discussions about trade relationships between North American nations and China.
Earlier, the US President had lashed out at Canada for opposing his proposed 'Golden Dome' missile defence project over Greenland, which he claims would also protect the Canadian territory.

Trump's outburst follows Canadian Prime Minister Carney's comments at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos where he condemned coercion by great powers on smaller countries without mentioning Trump's name. "Canada doesn't live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian," Carney said in response to Trump's remarks in Davos.
Carney had on January 17 announced a trade pact with China, and said it would potentially create new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses. "We've secured a new trade agreement with China - unlocking more than $7 billion in export markets for Canadian workers and businesses," he posted on X.
