US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order creating a framework to impose tariffs on countries that continue to trade with Iran, the White House said on Saturday.

The order establishes a process under which the United States can levy additional duties on imports from nations that directly or indirectly purchase goods or services from Iran. The White House said the move is intended to protect US national security, advance foreign policy goals and safeguard the American economy.

According to Reuters, the tariff could be as high as 25 percent for countries that maintain business ties with Tehran. The development comes amid continued tensions between Washington and Iran, even as diplomatic contacts were reported earlier this week.

Under the executive order, the US Secretary of State, Secretary of Commerce and the US Trade Representative have been authorised to issue rules and guidance to implement the tariff regime. The order also allows the President to modify the policy in response to retaliation or if countries take steps that align with US security and economic objectives.

In a press release, the administration said the order reaffirms a national emergency related to threats posed by Iran, including its nuclear programme, ballistic missile development, support for terrorism and actions seen as destabilising the Middle East. The statement again described Iran as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.

The White House said the measure builds on Trump’s long-standing approach toward Iran, pointing to actions during his earlier term such as withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal and designating Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organisation. Recent military and diplomatic steps were also cited as part of efforts to push Tehran toward an agreement that would prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons.
