President Donald Trump on Monday attacked Hollywood director Rob Reiner, a long-time critic of the president, a day after Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead inside their Los Angeles home in what authorities are investigating as a homicide.
Los Angeles Fire Department officials said they responded to a medical aid call at around 3:40 p.m. local time on Sunday and discovered the bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman inside the residence. Rob Reiner had turned 78 in March. The couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and is being held on $4 million bond, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department jail records. No charges have yet been listed, and police have not disclosed a motive.
Despite the lack of official findings, Trump used his Truth Social platform to suggest the killings were linked to Reiner’s political views.
“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood,” Trump wrote. “Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”
Trump added that Reiner had a “raging obsession” with him, writing that his “obvious paranoia” intensified as “the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before.” He concluded: “May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”
There is no evidence to support Trump’s claims, and authorities have not linked the deaths to Reiner’s political activity.
Tributes to Reiner poured in from across the entertainment and political worlds. Former President Barack Obama said that “beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people – and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.”
Reiner, a prominent supporter of the Democratic Party, was best known for directing films including This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men.
