Thick smoke rising over Parand, a town near Iran’s capital Tehran, sparked online speculation on Wednesday after reports of a possible explosion circulated on social media. Local residents said the haze remained visible for more than two hours, fuelling rumours amid heightened regional tensions.
Iran International reported on X that a Parand resident had shared a video claiming an explosion was heard, followed by smoke rising in the area. Moneycontrol could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage.

Iranian authorities, however, rejected claims of any security-related incident. State media, citing officials from the Parand fire department, said the smoke was caused by a fire in reeds along the Parand riverbank. Firefighters were deployed to the site and extinguishing operations were underway, according to the report.
Reuters reported that state television broadcast visuals showing smoke rising over Parand, which is located in Tehran province near several military and strategic installations. No casualties or damage linked to military activity were reported.
The incident comes at a time of rising speculation about a potential escalation between the United States and Iran. According to a report by Axios, officials and sources have suggested that the Trump administration may be moving closer to a major military confrontation with Tehran if diplomatic efforts fail.
Axios said any potential military action would likely resemble a broad campaign lasting several weeks rather than a limited or symbolic strike. The report added that preparations in the region point to the possibility of joint US-Israeli action, a scenario that could have serious implications for regional stability and global geopolitics.
The report also noted that an expanding US military presence in the region, including aircraft carriers, fighter jets, and air defence systems, has increased expectations within the administration that any response would be substantial should nuclear negotiations with Iran collapse.
