The Norwegian Nobel Committee has reiterated that the Peace Prize cannot be “shared, revoked or transferred”, responding to a suggestion by Nobel Laureate and Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado that she would like to give her award to US President Donald Trump.
“A Nobel Prize can neither be revoked, shared, nor transferred to others. Once the announcement has been made, the decision stands for all time,” the Committee said in a statement clarifying the rules governing the prestigious award, according to NDTV
Trump said on Saturday, saying he would discuss Machado’s offer when she visits the United States next week, amid heightened tensions between Washington and Venezuela following the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro and Trump’s declarations on the country’s oil reserves.
“I think it’s very nice she wants to come in, and that’s what I understand the reason is,” Trump said, referring to Machado’s planned visit to Washington.
Asked about Machado’s actions and the prospect of receiving her Nobel Peace Prize honour, Trump also reiterated his long-standing belief that he is deserving of the award. In comments reported in other coverage, he said a Nobel should be awarded for “every war you stopped,” highlighting his claims of brokering an unusually high number of peace outcomes during his presidency.
Machado received the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting democratic rights and a peaceful transition in Venezuela. Her proposal to share or transfer the prize to Trump has drawn global attention, prompting the Nobel Committee’s clarification on the Prize’s irrevocable nature.
