Jeff Bezos has always been comfortable taking big bets. But a new report suggests that some of his personal and business ventures rank among the most expensive and high-risk activities ever attempted.
According to a study by Foresight Sports, Bezos has taken part in three pursuits considered among the world’s riskiest and costliest. The most expensive, the report says, involved travel in a custom-built spacecraft, with the total investment linked to that effort estimated at about $5.5 billion, or roughly Rs 50,000 crore.
That figure reflects the enormous sums poured into Blue Origin, the private space company Bezos founded more than two decades ago. In 2021, he flew aboard the company’s New Shepard rocket on its first crewed mission. The suborbital flight lasted only about 10 minutes, but it represented years of engineering work and billions in funding aimed at building a reusable space tourism business.
The report also highlights travel to the International Space Station as another extremely costly and risky undertaking. In recent years, private citizens have paid tens of millions of dollars for a seat aboard missions arranged through commercial space partnerships. In Indian currency, such trips can run into hundreds of crores per passenger.
A third activity mentioned in the study is another extreme pursuit, though the report suggests its cost was far lower than the spacecraft investment. Even so, taken together, the ventures underline how far Bezos has been willing to push both financially and physically.
Despite developments made by NASA and private companies, spaceflight is still one of the most dangerous undertakings a civilian can attempt. Some very real risks include failure to launch, technical malfunctions and exposure to space radiation. Even short trips beyond Earth require complex life support systems and layers of safety checks.
Bezos has repeatedly said he believes private investment is key to opening up space for future generations. He has argued that moving heavy industry off Earth and building infrastructure in space could ultimately benefit the planet.
Many people are critical of the scale of spending. Critics question whether billions should go toward space tourism when very real issues remain on Earth. Supporters respond that transformative technologies often begin as expensive experiments backed by wealthy risk-takers.
Either way, the report makes one thing clear: Bezos’ appetite for risk is matched only by the size of the cheques he is willing to write.
