Vikrant Thakur, accused of killing his wife Supriya in Adelaide, admitted to manslaughter but denied murder. The case is adjourned until April as police await forensic evidence. A fundraiser supports Supriya’s son after her death. The investigation continues.

An Indian-origin man accused of killing his wife in Australia has admitted responsibility for her death but denied that he committed murder.

Vikrant Thakur, 42, appeared before the Adelaide Magistrates Court on January 14 for the second hearing in connection with the death of his wife, Supriya Thakur, who died in December last year.

Following legal advice, Vikrant told the court, “I plead for manslaughter, but not guilty for murder.”

Manslaughter is a lesser offence than murder and is generally applied when a person’s actions unintentionally cause death, while murder requires intent to kill.

According to reports by NDTV and ABC News, police were called to a home in Adelaide’s northern suburbs on December 21 after Supriya, 36, was found unconscious. Emergency crews attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but she could not be revived.

At his first court appearance on December 22, Vikrant did not apply for bail. Prosecutors requested the matter be adjourned for 16 weeks while they await key evidence, including DNA analysis and the post-mortem report. The court accepted the request, and the case is scheduled to be heard again in April.

In the aftermath of Supriya’s death, friends and members of the local community have launched a fundraiser to support her young son. A GoFundMe page set up in his name described Supriya as a devoted and hardworking mother.

“Her tragic passing has left her son without his mother and has turned his life upside down overnight. He is now facing an uncertain future without the person who cared for him most,” the page read.

The appeal added, “The funds raised will be used to assist with funeral and memorial expenses, as well as to provide ongoing support and stability for Supriya’s son.”

The investigation into Supriya’s death remains ongoing as authorities await forensic and medical reports that are expected to play a key role in determining how the case proceeds.
