US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor arrived in India this weekend, marking a key step in efforts to repair bilateral ties after a period of heightened tension over tariffs and stalled trade negotiations.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Gor wrote, “Great to be back in India! Incredible opportunities ahead for our two nations!” The 38-year-old envoy, a close aide to President Donald Trump and former White House personnel director, is expected to prioritise rebuilding the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Gor was confirmed by the US Senate in October and sworn in mid-November. He had visited India for six days in October, meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to lay the groundwork for his mission.
Ties between Washington and New Delhi have recently been tested after the Trump administration imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods, including a 50 per cent duty on certain products and an additional 25 per cent on Russian crude oil imports. India described the action as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” and negotiations have been ongoing to formalise a trade deal that could address New Delhi’s concerns.
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick highlighted the complexities of the stalled trade agreement in a recent podcast. “Let's be clear, it's his (Trump's) deal. He does it. You got to have Modi call the President. They were uncomfortable doing it. So, Modi didn't call,” he said, noting that prior assumptions about India’s agreement had affected trade deals with Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
Trump had described Gor’s appointment as a vital step in strengthening US-India relations. “I’m trusting Sergio to help strengthen one of our country's most important international relationships and that’s the strategic partnership with India,” he said after Gor’s swearing-in ceremony.
With Gor now on Indian soil, attention will focus on whether the envoy can advance trade discussions while mending relations frayed by tariffs and political friction.
