Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found stabbed to death inside their Los Angeles home on Sunday, and their son, Nick Reiner, has now been taken into custody on suspicion of murder, according to ABC News.
Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested Sunday night and is being held on $4 million bail, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. While authorities have not publicly detailed the charges, law enforcement sources told ABC News that he has been booked on suspicion of murder.
Police were called to the couple’s Brentwood area home at around 3:40 pm local time after the bodies were discovered, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement, describing the case as an apparent homicide.
Senior law enforcement sources told ABC News that Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were stabbed to death. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later arrived at the residence as part of the investigation.
In a statement, the Reiner family confirmed the deaths. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the family said.
According to media reports, the couple were found by their daughter, Romy Reiner, who immediately contacted police. TMZ reported that Romy told authorities another family member should be considered a suspect, citing concerns that the individual was “dangerous.” Investigators are also examining whether the killings followed a heated argument inside the home, the report said.
A neighbour told ABC News that actors Billy Crystal and Larry David were seen at the house after police arrived. “Billy looked like he was about to cry,” the neighbour said, adding that the Reiners were well known in the area and frequently hosted gatherings.
Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner owned two homes across the street from each other. The couple lived in one, while one of their daughters and her children lived in the other, the neighbour said.
Rob Reiner was a towering figure in American film and television, known for directing and producing classics such as The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me, This Is Spinal Tap and A Few Good Men. He first rose to fame as an actor, playing Archie Bunker’s son in law on the sitcom All in the Family from 1971 to 1978.
Reiner was the son of comedian Carl Reiner and actress and singer Estelle Lebost. He was previously married to filmmaker Penny Marshall, who died in 2018. He and Michele Singer Reiner married in 1989 and had three children together, Jake, Nick and Romy.
Tributes poured in following news of the deaths. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called it “a devastating loss for our city and our country,” saying Reiner’s work had shaped American culture. California Governor Gavin Newsom said he was “heartbroken by the tragic loss,” praising Reiner’s empathy and creative legacy.
