Gunmen block roads, vehicles torched and highways shut: Unrest in Mexico as Cartel revenge takes center stage after El Mencho's killing

US deputy secretary of state Christopher Landau reacted on social media, saying, “It’s not surprising that the bad guys are responding with terror. But we must never lose our nerve.”

Mexico is facing unrest across several states following the death of Nemesio Oseguera, widely known as El Mencho, the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Within hours of his killing during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, gunmen believed to be loyal to him launched coordinated attacks. Highways were blocked with burning vehicles, businesses were set on fire and flights were canceled. In some cities, authorities asked residents and tourists to stay indoors as a safety measure.

The operation that led to Oseguera’s death was carried out by Mexican special forces with support from US intelligence, according to officials. He was injured during the raid and later died in custody. His body was transported to Mexico City under heavy security.

Air travel was disrupted in Puerto Vallarta, where airlines including Air Canada, United Airlines and Aeromexico canceled flights. Visitors at the beach resort recorded thick smoke rising over the bay as violence spread.

The unrest affected more than six states. In Jalisco, gunmen attacked a National Guard base and public transport was suspended. In Guanajuato, authorities reported 55 incidents across 23 municipalities and made 18 arrests, later saying the situation was under control. Videos shared by security sources showed roadblocks on major highways, armed men stopping vehicles and military presence in residential areas.

A CJNG member told Reuters the violence was revenge for Oseguera’s death. “The attacks were carried out in revenge for the leader’s death, at first against the government and out of discontent," the person said. "But later the internal killings are coming, by the groups moving in to take over."

Residents described fear and uncertainty. “There is fear and a lot of caution,” said Carlo Gutierrez from Guadalajara.

US deputy secretary of state Christopher Landau reacted on social media, saying, “It’s not surprising that the bad guys are responding with terror. But we must never lose our nerve.”

President Claudia Sheinbaum said daily life was normal in most of the country, but the events show the risks of targeting powerful cartel leaders whose networks stretch across Mexico.
