Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif faced widespread ridicule after telling parliament that Indian drones were not intercepted by the Pakistani Army in order to avoid revealing the locations of the country’s air defence systems.
His statement, which directly contradicted earlier military claims of successfully shooting down Indian drones, sparked backlash online, with critics mocking the logic of letting enemy drones fly unchallenged during escalating tensions.
“The drone attack was mounted to detect our locations. It’s a technical thing that I can’t explain. We didn’t intercept the drones, so that the location of our aerial defence units won’t get leaked” he said.
His remarks became a topic of ridicule on social media. Some of the reactions can be seen below.
Alright. But what about our missiles taking out terror locations ?Even those were not intercepted intentionally? What's the point of air defense systems then ? Stock Market India (@Stock_marketIND) May 9, 2025

The Indian armed forces said that it thwarted Pakistan's attempt to attack military establishments across several cities such Jammu, Pathankot and Jaisalmer using 300-400 Turkish drones, which were intercepted and neutralised by India's air defence system. In retaliatory action, Indian drones targeted four Pakistani air defence sites and destroyed one of their air defence radar.
Earlier on Thursday, Pakistani Army claimed that they had shot down 25 Indian drones since Wednesday night.
Army spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry later admitted that drone strikes in Rawalpindi, Lahore, and an area near Karachi had led to one civilian death and another person injured.
Few days ago, Asif was mocked on social media for his remarks made a CNN interview. He was questioned for proof on Pakistan Army's claim of having downed five Indian fighter jets, to which he pointed fingers at social media.
"It’s all over social media. On Indian social media, not on our social media. The debris of these jets fell… and it’s all over Indian media," he said.
In an interview to Sky News’ Yalda Hakim, Asif admitted that his nation has been doing ‘dirty work’ of supporting and funding terrorism in South Asia for decades.
