As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for his two-day visit to Israel from February 25 to 26, defence cooperation has emerged as a key point of interest alongside diplomacy. Modi is expected to address the Knesset and hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, marking his second visit to the country since 2017.
Against this backdrop, reports suggest that Israel has offered India one of its most secretive weapons systems, the Golden Horizon air-launched ballistic missile. Neither government has officially confirmed the proposal, but the possibility has drawn attention within defence circles.
What is the Golden Horizon missile?
Golden Horizon is believed to be an air-launched ballistic missile, or ALBM, a rare class of weapons designed to be released from fighter aircraft rather than ground launchers. Very little has been officially disclosed about the system.
Leaked US intelligence documents, which surfaced ahead of Israel’s October 2024 strikes on Iran, indicated that Israel was developing two previously undisclosed missiles named Golden Horizon and Rocks. The latter is understood to be a Rafael-developed system derived from the Anchor family of test missiles.
Defence analysts estimate Golden Horizon’s range at roughly 1,500 to 2,000 kilometres, placing it far beyond other known Israeli air-launched systems such as Rampage or Air LORA, which have ranges of about 280 kilometres.
“Golden Horizon likely has the range for Israeli aircraft to hit Tehran without having to enter Iranian airspace, removing a lot of risk from the equation,” Sebastien Roblin told Business Insider.
Some experts believe the missile’s effective range from a fighter jet could be closer to 800 kilometres, depending on payload and launch profile.
Where does it come from?
Open-source assessments suggest Golden Horizon may be linked to Israel’s Sparrow missile family, which was originally developed to simulate enemy ballistic missiles for testing Israel’s Arrow missile defence system.
Israel’s Blue Sparrow variant, for example, has an estimated range of over 2,000 kilometres. The earlier Silver Sparrow is reported to be over eight metres long and weigh more than three tonnes, hinting at the scale of systems Israel has already mastered.
Why does it matter for India?
If the reported offer materialises, Golden Horizon could significantly enhance India’s long-range strike capabilities. Defence reports claim the missile is being customised for integration with the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fighter fleet.
Unlike cruise missiles, ballistic missiles follow steep, high-speed trajectories that make interception far more difficult. When launched from aircraft, they also avoid the vulnerability of fixed ground launch sites.
“They can come from any direction and make defence much harder,” Uzi Rubin, a former head of Israel’s missile defence programme, has said.
Federico Borsari of the Centre for European Policy Analysis told Forbes that air-launched ballistic missiles offer greater operational flexibility than short-range ground-launched ballistic missiles because aircraft can position themselves closer to targets.
Speed and penetration advantage
Golden Horizon is reportedly designed to strike deeply buried and hardened targets, including underground command centres and fortified facilities. After release from an aircraft, the missile is believed to climb to near-space altitudes before descending at hypersonic speeds exceeding Mach 5.
For comparison, India’s BrahMos cruise missile travels at around Mach 2.8.
“The main advantage of an [air-launched ballistic missile] over an [air-launched cruise missile] is speed to penetrate defences. The downside, accuracy, looks to have been largely solved,” Jeffrey Lewis told Reuters in November 2024.
A quiet but significant shift
Only a handful of countries, including Russia, China and Israel, are known to operate air-launched ballistic missiles. If India joins that list through a Golden Horizon deal, it would mark a notable shift in the Indian Air Force’s deep-strike doctrine.
With Modi’s Israel visit approaching, the reported missile offer underlines how defence technology continues to anchor the strategic partnership between New Delhi and Tel Aviv, even as both sides remain publicly silent on the specifics.
